Chemistry - Grade 6
INTRODUCTION
The grade 6's are learning chemistry this year! You are responsible for learning about different types of mixtures. By the end of this unit you should understand what homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures are.
You should be able to describe the difference between:
-suspensions (like in salad dressing)
-elusions (like in milk)
-colloids (like in aerosols)
You will also need to be able to discuss how to separate them and provide examples from around the world. There will be a number of methods that we will discuss including:
-separating through gravity
-separating using particle size
-historical and current methods of Aboriginal use of separation techniques
THE TASK
You will complete this web quest and answer the questions contained within these missions.
THE PROCESS
Instructions:
You will need a paper and a pencil or pen.
Please write your name and the date and the Mission Number.
Please write the question down.
Please write the answer in complete sentences.
Complete the following missions:
MISSION 1:
First understand that:
All matter is classified into two categories: pure substances and mixtures.
Lets start with the question:
1. What is a mixture? (2 marks)
2. What is a pure substance? (2 marks)
Try to find an answer that makes sense to you online or in a book. Remember to only use words you know! Check the grade 7 textbook as well (the grade 6 textbook does not deal with mixtures).
*Remember we are studying mixtures not pure substances but we do need to know the difference.
Now, let's work on types of mixtures. The website Chem4Kids has a very good write up on mixtures. Please review it an answer the questions below. I also recommend looking at the related webpages to learn more about matter.
After reading the sections on mixtures on the Chem4Kids website, please answer these questions:
2. What is a pencil and why? (2 marks)
3. What is one way to separate sand and water mentioned in the article? (2 marks)
MISSION 2:
Video time. Please watch this video
Now, please answer these questions.
When you are finished MISSIONS 1 and 2 hand it in and wait to start MISSION 3.
MISSION 3:
By now you should have an idea of what a mixture is. You should also be able to give a couple examples of each.
To help with this please look at this flow chart which will help you determine what kind of mixture the item is.
Once you see the flow chart start to analyze this list of materials and determine what kind of mixture it is. Please write down the results from at least 10 items on the materials.
MISSION 4:
Lab time. When missions 1-3 are submitted we will need to make some mixtures in the class and work on separating them.
MISSION 5:
We have learned about different kinds of mixtures and by now should have even been able to make some.
Next we need to learn how to separate these mixtures.
Please review to learn about several separation methods.
